Synthesis means putting together and integrating data and information from many sources. Synthesis of IEP data and information is needed to provide the context and knowledge needed for science-based decision making. Conceptual and quantitative models are important synthesis tools. IEP synthesis efforts often involve collaborative, interdisciplinary teams of IEP scientists and scientific partners. IEP data and information is also often used for synthesis efforts conducted by others.

In January 2015, the MAST completed a Delta Smelt Synthesis Report: "An updated conceptual model of Delta Smelt biology: our evolving understanding of an estuarine fish." This final report presents a new conceptual model for Delta Smelt and its habitat, and uses the model to understand why 2011 was a good year for Delta Smelt. This report has been revised based on stakeholder comment as well as reviews from three independent peer reviewers coordinated by the Delta Science Program.

The IEP MAST also produced the 2012 “Fall Low Salinity Habitat” (FLaSH) report, developed priority research topics for the 2012 IEP research proposal solicitation package, and published a 2014 synthesis report and appendix about the role of low-salinity habitat in the San Francisco Estuary to the biology of Delta Smelt.

III. Program-level synthesis efforts

Information about individual IEP programs as well as about the IEP as a whole is sometimes summarized in synthesis reports. For example, IEP staff teams often prepare background documents for reviewers that synthesize program data and metadata into reviewable information. Some of these synthesis documents can be found at . Another example is a recent report about the history of the IEP (Herrgesell 2013).

IV. Other synthesis efforts using IEP data and Information

IEP data is widely used in scientific synthesis efforts about Bay-Delta ecology. Some recent examples are given here, but many others exist.
