CALIFORNIA DISASTER HISTORY

Floods can and do happen in California. In fact, since 1950, flood disasters have been declared in every California county at least nine times. Since 1983, Central Valley State-Federal project levees have been breached or overtopped more than 50 times. Levee failures – like those that occurred in the Central Valley in 1986 and 1997 – can result in catastrophic flooding, claiming lives and causing billions in property damages.

FEMA’s California Disaster History
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has prepared this online document of California’s federally declared disasters back to the great flood of 1955.
