Floodplain Assistance


The Floodplain Assistance Section is responsible for administering the State’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program. This section is responsible for encouraging cities and counties to properly administer their local Floodplain Management ordinances, to develop community flood hazard mitigation plans, and to support sound floodplain management practices relating to the use of floodplain lands. Included in these programs are administration of the State Cobey-Alquist Floodplain Management Act, technical assistance to local governments for the National Flood Insurance Program, the Floodplain Management Program, and the Hazard Mitigation Program; coordination and facilitation of work by the Department’s districts on these programs, including conducting Community Assistance Visits (CAVs) and technical workshops; and liaison with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies, various State and local agencies, and related interest groups for the exchange of information and coordination of activities related to flood damage reduction.
